Ode to the West Pier

A graceful old lady
brought to her knees
a storm in the summer
batters her flanks.

As the wind howls
the waves crash
overhead grey skies
dark forbidding sea.

The scavengers pick
like hungry ugly vultures
they seek treasures
and some even mourn.

What men tried to start
mother nature tries to finish
but the old girl won't quit
strength and serenity even in death.

The end of an era?
Memories of style
and solid construction
no cowboy building here!

How sad the picture is
neglected and left to rot
this lovely old lady
brings shame on us all!
